Shelter House

Shelter House offers a 70-bed emergency shelter and drop-in services. For more information, visit the Shelter House website.

NOTE: From March 18 thru April 1, Shelter House will not be taking new clients. Their capacity will be updated every 2 weeks in response to COVID-19. Please call 319-351-0326 for more information. 

Resources Available for Shelter Residents:

  • Children’s play area
  • Computer lab (limited hours)
  • Mailing address service
  • Recreation area with TV
  • Shower and laundry facility
  • Telephone access
  • Weekly nurse’s clinic

COVID-19 Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program

Governor Reynolds has allocated federal CARES Act funds to assist Iowans who have been economically impacted by COVID-19 and may be facing housing hardships. This program will provide short-term relief to income-eligible renters and homeowners who are at risk of eviction or foreclosure. Click here for more information.

Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services (SLS) provides free legal advice and low-cost representation to University of Iowa students on a variety of matters including but not limited to: criminal law, landlord/tenant law, small claims, consumer, divorce, and employment. Students can request appointments via the SLS website, or by e-mailing
